❗FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ❗
A so-called ‘Rescue’ soliciting public donations, has now been exposed for neglecting and harming the very animals they claimed to protect.
The SPCA wishes to inform the public of serious concerns regarding a self-proclaimed “animal rescue organisation” operating within our community. It has become clear that this rescue has been misrepresenting itself as a legitimate animal welfare entity while failing to meet the minimum standards of care, transparency, and compliance required of true rescue organisations.
The conditions these animals were kept is one of the worst that we have encountered.
The LSC SPCA Inspectorate found that animals were being kept in abhorrent and compromised conditions, unacceptable hygiene standards, insufficient access to veterinary care, little to no water, kept locked up in rooms, one in a carrier, one in a small outdoor bathroom found in an absolutely shocking state with not only old faeces, but ant infested rotten food.
Animals were housed without proper record-keeping, traceability, or evidence of lawful surrender. These findings raise significant questions regarding the welfare and legal status of the animals in this organisation’s possession.
After numerous warnings, a warrant was obtained from the Port Shepstone Magistrate Court where a total of 14 cats, 13 dogs and 2 chickens were seized under warrant.
One kitten was sadly found deceased.
Eleven severely compromised cats were removed before the warrant was obtained.
These cats were unfortunately humanely euthanased to end suffering.
Failure to comply with essential welfare standards is a stark reminder that not all organisations uphold the required ethics and care.
Despite publicly portraying themselves as a rescue, the organisation is not affiliated with, recognised by, or compliant with the standards of the National or local SPCA.
Their use of terms such as “rescue,” “rehabilitation,” or “welfare” has the potential to mislead donors and the public.
The Lower South Coast SPCA urges community members to exercise caution when supporting organisations that claim to be involved in animal rescue. True, registered organisations operate transparently, lawfully, and with the animals’ best interests as the highest priority.
We encourage the public to verify the legitimacy of any welfare group before donating animals, funds, or support.
We remain committed to protecting animals from harm, holding individuals and organisations accountable under the Law, and ensuring that the public has accurate information regarding the welfare services in our area.
Many people donate in good faith, believing their money helps animals. Others surrender pets to these facilities, thinking they are giving them a chance. In reality, they may be handing them over to a life of neglect.
Visit before you donate – A registered NPO or NPC does not guarantee ethical practices. Always physically inspect facilities before supporting them.
Uncontrolled intake is a red flag – any facility taking in unlimited animals without a euthanasia policy is likely hoarding, not rescuing.
Those who surrender irresponsibly contribute to the problem – private rescue groups and individuals who drop off animals at places like this to avoid euthanasia are enabling suffering.
SPCA Inspectors are the only ones standing between suffering animals and those who exploit them. But we can’t do it alone. Your support keeps our inspectors in the field, exposing exploitation and seeking justice.
Charges are being laid under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
You can help us by donating towards the LSC SPCA Inspectorate to carry out and continue our vital work in preventing Animal Cruelty -
